I created an executable binary using GraalVM around JavaRosa to validate and generate instances instead of reimplementing the validation logic ourselves. The logic to use the binary file is heavily inspired from [pyxform's wrapper](https://github.com/XLSForm/pyxform/tree/master/pyxform/validators/odk_validate) around [getODK/Validate](https://github.com/getodk/validate).
